The UN plans on using the blockchain for Afghanistan infrastructure

The blockchain in Urban developments

There was a report on July the 2de 2019, coming from the tech media website called The Socialable. That reported that it was developing a blockchain-powered solution for the sustainable urban development in Afghanistan. The UN has now turned to the distributed ledger technology(DLT) in order to develop a robust solution that will help the Afghanistan government to manage land records.

The project is primarily focused on the United Nations Office of Communication and information technologies. The company is building a blockchain-based platform that will assist the national government when managing land records, in an efficient and transparent way.

According to reports coming from the spokesperson at the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric. Thinks that the blockchain technology has the potential to become a key tool to power solutions and administrative task in the country. He also mentioned that there is an initiative called the ‘City for all’ and the UN-Habitat that is aiding the country’s government in the advancement of twelve major cities. The program is aiming to make the Afghanistan population become a urban city by the year 2035. The project will be focused on three fundamental components, mainly: strategic urban planning, transparent flow of municipal finance and effective land management.

The UN and the Blockchain

This decision to use the blockchain technology to tackle the infrastructural problems in Afghanitan is the result of a recent Memorandum of Understanding(MoU). Which was reached between the UN-OICT together with the UN-Habitat. These companies are focused on emerging technologies for urban design and planning in the country. And will be helping countries in Sri Lanka, India, South Asia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

According to Dujarric, he thinks that:

“Based on the programs outcomes and experience gained on the focus countries, an expansion plan might be put in place, also replying on the global engagement at UN-Habitat headquarters’ level.”

The UN is one of the worlds largest and most influential international organisations, and has now taken the initiative to raise awareness of emerging technologies like the blockchain technology.

There has also recently been a partnership with the SingularityNET and the United Nations Educational institute for Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). In order to teach children about the developments and scope of emerging technologies in the country. Which has led top organisations to use the Ethereum Blockchain to distribute funds to Jordanian refugee camps.
