Cryptocurrency users now have the opportunity to help in fighting the Amazon fire, which continues to destroy forest cover, displace and even kill exotic animal species. This is after a non-profit organization that’s helping to fight the Brazilian Amazon fires has turned to the cryptocurrency community for help in fighting the fire.
The NGO, known as the Rainforest Foundation, is based in New York and serves South America and parts of Central America. The Rainforest foundation even has its cryptocurrency known as BitSeed.
On September 4th, the Rainforest Foundation, through their website, asked the crypto community to support it in its efforts of putting off the Amazon fires. The exact message on their website read:
“Since Bolsonaro took office in January, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is up 75%, and forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon have doubled compared to the past year. As guardians of our rainforests, its animals and its people, we are working with The Giving Block to form a coalition of crypto sponsors, donors and media partners who will help stop this devastation.”
The foundation is currently setting up a blockchain pilot which will help create transparency in the donations. This platform will allow donors to track how their funds have been spent in fighting the Amazon fires. The Rainforest foundation also hopes to use the Crypto to reward communities in South America that conserve forests.
According to the foundation’s executive director, Suzanne Pelletier, using the old school philanthropy would not have been useful, which forced the foundation to seek help from crypto users.
“Business as usual has gotten us to this point. Philanthropy as usual won’t get us out. We need innovative solutions, and no one is more innovative than cryptocurrency users.”
Speaking to CoinDesk, Suzanne also added that, “[Crypto is] filled with people that are thinking differently and trying to change the rules of the game. It’s so slow and so bureaucratic to raise support from foundations. It’s going to be too late. We don’t have enough time,”
The Rainforest foundation hopes to raise $100 million to help its cause in fighting the fire. Donors willing to support this cause can donate in Bitcoins, Ethereum, Litecoin, and other cryptocurrencies as well.
