US Copyright Office: Craig Wright Is Not The Bitcoin Creator

In a press release issued yesterday, the US Copyright Office has said that it doesn’t recognize Craig Wright as the official Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. This comes after the self-proclaimed Satoshi circulated a statement on Tuesday which claimed that the institution had accepted his copyright registration indicating he was the author of the original Bitcoin white paper and code.

In the press release the agency noted:

“As a general rule, when the Copyright Office receives an application for registration, the claimant certifies as to the truth of the statements made in the submitted materials. The Copyright Office does not investigate the truth of any statement made. In a case in which a work is registered under a pseudonym, the Copyright Office does not investigate whether there is a provable connection between the claimant and the pseudonymous author.”

Wright Had Claimed To Be Bitcoin Creator

Interestingly all it takes to register a copyright is a stable internet connection and $55. And this means the claim that the U.S. government has registered Wright as the official Bitcoin author is bogus at best. One would wonder why the government would bother itself to clarify this point, but Wright’s actions required this action.

On May 21 a press representative sent a widely circulated press release that suggested the US government had accepted Craig Wright was Nakamoto. The statement read:

“Importantly, the registrations issued by the US Copyright Office recognize Wright as the author – under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto – of both the white paper and code. This is the first government agency recognition of Craig Wright as Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin.”

The above statement turns out to be untrue since the purpose of the U.S. Copyright Office isn’t to recognize anyone for anything. Its main goal is to act as a repository that protects creators of art and literature.

Wright’s actions saw Bitcoin SV jump almost 200% on some exchanges, the coin currently is trading at $101 according to coinmarketcap.com.
