Google silently lifts the cryptocurrency advertising ban, or it was never imposed

Google silently lifts the cryptocurrency advertising ban although no official statement has been issued. For perspective, in March this year, Google indicated it will be updating its financial services policy so that advertisements pertaining to “Cryptocurrencies and related content (including but not limited to initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges, cryptocurrency wallets, and cryptocurrency trading advice)” will no longer be allowed to run on the platform. The ban was supposed to take effect from June 1.

But as it appears, the internet giant has silently lifted the cryptocurrency advertising ban or the ban was never imposed at all. A look at the policy shows that it was last updated on March 2018.

This has been manifested by searching cryptocurrency related material and on the Search Engine’s Result Page (SERP) appeared some virtual currency related ads, eg. for etoro and Coinbase.

Although there is no official communication from Google givng a guideline of what will and will not be allowed, Redditors were keen to point out the new position of Google concerning crypto ads.

However, some redditors noted that the ban was never imposed. A Redditor  noted that “Google never really enforced their ban. I run ads for several companies in the space and none of them were banned/ paused.” “Yes that’s true. The ban was supposed to be implemented from June 1 but the ads were still running even after that date and then the ban was announced ‘lifted’ ” replied another Redditor.

The conversation of Google silently lifting the ban comes a few days after Facebook announced that it has lifted its ban on cryptocurrency advertising although ICOs are yet to be cleared for advertising.

Whether Google will give an official statement concerning the current turn of events is something we are yet to see. Probably, they may follow Facebook’s path and allow only established  ads and restrict ICO ads. Google trends was also adversely affected by the ban.

As Google silently lifts the cryptocurrency advertising ban, do you think they open up the platform for everything crypto?
